No, because he rotated around money and interests connected to money. His interests simply crossed paths with someone else's interests, and that someone else had a little more weight.

Russia is ruthless capitalism, and contract killings have been a part of Russian business landscape for the last 20 years (not as bad as '95, when 10 S600 Mercedeses blew up every 24 hours, but it's still there).

He was already convicted in Israeli court for that offense, and served his time. And yeah, the man's business associates were probably unsavory - in general someone who does well in the Sierra Leone diamond business lives on the edge.

Moscow has a murder rate of 9.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, LA has 12.4, Houston has 16.3, Detroit 41.1, Washinton DC 35.4, etc etc etc.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004902.html

So yeah, Moscow is actually quite safe in comparison.

Derbedeu, this murder was nothing but a kind of "inter corporation relations culture" which rule in Russia currently. You can expect much more such incidents soon after an assassination of Viacheslav Ivankov aka "Japanese" last summer.

Looking for political motives of it is just pure rubbish.

I think I have figured out why he died. It involves pants. He didn't wear those that day and wasn't invincible. If he had worn those he would still be alive and there would be less hitmen still alive.

Not really. Again, for example someone likes the property your business occupies, or someone owes you money they are not planning on giving back, or your business partner decides to go solo, or you don't pay rollbacks to the right people...etc.

Looks like to be a high profile business man in xUSSR is still a very dengerous business itself. Interesting, is there other areas in a world where CEO gets killed like this?

This is true for normal people. If you dealt with criminal money, you are in danger. If you started business in 90s, I will give almost 100% probability you had business with criminals. Today in Russia small and medium business is very safe.

Not only in Russia, it is the same everywhere in xUSSR and some parts of eastern europe. Bigger fish bite smaller one and sharks sometimes are fighting to death.
