I don't believe psychologists when they give tips on how to look out for "troubled signs" in depressed people. They don't fit into that profile of depressed, suicidal loners like many anticipate.

from what I see, the people who are most depressed are the ones that dont show anyone. A couple of my friends have serious depression problems and you would never guess they did by the way they show themselves so to speak.
RIP to the student, he'll be in my prayers. |

Some of the attempts to make smart a r s e comments
about the death of this student = Big Time Fail. Hopefully you and yours, will never feel so depressed, and under pressure to attempt to do what he did. Connaught Ranger. |

I'm a current NYU student, heard about this yesterday. Unfortunately this isn't the first suicide to happen in our library. They even put up plexiglass plates on the balconies to prevent people from jumping a few years back I think.

wow this is sad, makes me feel older, now that i think about all the freshmen/sophmores at my school.
I feel somehow that a lot of these suicides are the result of peer pressure , from other people(namely family), to become somthing "proud of" or "rich" or whatever else. people wanting them to be Doctors, Physists(sp), etc (rich and "Successful", just like their parents). Generally stuff that requires a lot of schooling, money, time, etc. But, in the end, you (theoretically) get the big $$$. which i feel is the driving force behind most of the students who go for such degree's. Instead of studing stuff that they may enjoy (and maybe resulting in a smaller paycheck), they stress for the degree with the $$$ in it and make their peers happy. Its sad to think people actually studing something they may hate for the sake of money, No wonder these kids are all depressed. Couple this with other factors like friends, enviorment, professors, etc. it seems inevitable for these kids to be unhappy. Coming from a family that stopped going to school once they got thier teaching certificate, theres no pressure as to what ,and how well, i study in college. Just as long as I get a degree. Im studing what i love and im sure im not going to be using it outside of school( though ou never know). Though i hate school, which is why im taking 4-5 advanced classes a semester (including summers), and im not feeling one bit stressed or suicidal over my hectic schedule with school, work, and family/friends. |

I've never found workload or the work at university particularly stressful. But then starting at 26 I suppose I'd already developed keen time management skills from my previous life.
Money however, has been a constant source of great anxiety over the past 3+ years. Running a mortgage, car, insurance, pension etc. etc. is just insanely difficult when the most you can earn is €6ph and savings interest rates are running around an average of -150%. Money stress whilst studying has eclipsed any aspect of stress I experienced previously, particularly since the global economy went to ****. |

Personally I don't believe college will be that hard for me considering I am currently going through twice or possibly more than any ordinary high school student and still getting 90's. |

No, it's my neighborhood and I knew people who went. Anyway before this gets off topic, don't assume you'll be ready for college. I know for a fact that Aviation is another fantasy vs reality school.

School is very important, I don't have any fancy Master's degree or anything but I have my Bachelors. I remember getting really stressed out in Sophmore and Junior year when the classwork was the hardest. However, it's not important enough for someone to take their own life because of it.
Very true, they had an Aviation program at my college. One of my good friends was in it and he is struggling heavily with "reality" now that he is out. He is stuck as a flight instructor working for pennies, and since you need to get your ATP license to work for an Airline now he is going back to school to get a degree in something useful since he kind of hit the brick wall with Aviation. |
